High school maths, worked out step by step.

Twelve hands-on tools for Years 7 to 10: algebra tiles, a balance for equations, a clinometer for trigonometry. In algebra, your teenager writes every line of working and SubjectMate checks each one. If they get stuck, SubjectMate provides them with a hint for the next step, never the answer.

How every tool works

From equipment to working it out in their head.

Each tool starts with something your teenager can see and move. As they get more confident, the tool gives them less support, until they can solve the problem with just pen and paper.

1

Real equipment

Algebra tiles to build x² + 5x + 6 as a rectangle, a balance to keep both sides equal, a clinometer to measure an angle: the equipment good maths classrooms use.

2

Written working

Next they write each line of working, the way it’s set out in their exercise book. Every line is checked as they go, so a mistake is caught on the line where it happens.

3

In their head

Finally they solve it without the tool. When they get two right in a row without a hint, the next level opens.

When they get stuck

Every line checked. The answer never given.

In algebra, one wrong line ruins everything after it. SubjectMate checks each line your teenager writes and, if it’s wrong, says what kind of mistake it is, like forgetting to multiply the second term in a bracket. Then they fix it themselves.

  • Any correct method counts. 2(x + 3) and 2x + 6 are both right. The checker follows the maths, not one set of steps.
  • The words their teacher uses. Inverse operation, pronumeral, hypotenuse, gradient, interquartile range.
  • Written by a teacher. Every hint is checked against the curriculum.
  1. First press

    Explains it a different way

Solving 5x + 3 = 2x + 15: “There are x’s on both sides. Can you get them onto one side?”

  2. Second press

    Asks about the next step

“What happens to the balance if you take 2x off both sides?”

  3. Third press

Shows one step, then lets them finish

“Take 2x off both sides: 3x + 3 = 15. What comes next?” Your teenager finishes the working.

The studio

Twelve tools covering Years 7 to 10 maths.

Curriculum

Matched to your state’s curriculum.

SubjectMate knows your child’s state and year level. Each tool shows the tasks their class is learning, in the right order, using the same words their teacher uses. NSW and the other states don’t always teach topics in the same year, and the studio follows yours.

Pythagoras’ theorem
NSW: Stage 4Other states: Year 8

NSW students can meet Pythagoras in Year 7 or 8, during Stage 4. In the other states it’s Year 8. Each student sees it when their class does.

Linear equations
Year 7Year 8Year 9

From two-step equations with whole-number answers in Year 7, to brackets, pronumerals on both sides and inequalities.

Questions parents ask

Good to know.

Will it just give my teenager the answer?

No. The tools never show an answer your teenager hasn’t worked out, and “I’m stuck” gives one step at a time. When a line of working is wrong, SubjectMate names the kind of mistake, not the fix.

Which year levels is it for?

Years 7 to 10. Each tool starts at your child’s year level and steps up after two correct answers in a row without hints. Years 3 to 6 have their own primary Maths Studio.

Do they need a calculator?

For some Year 9 and 10 tasks, such as trigonometry, yes: they use their own calculator, just like in class. The task says when, and how to round the answer.

What about Years 11 and 12?

Senior maths tools are next. Until then, Years 11 and 12 students can use the graphing tools inside the tutor.

Can we try it before signing up?

Yes. Every tool on this page has a free preview of two tasks. The 7-day free trial opens all the tools at your child’s year level and saves their progress.

Is the Maths Studio an extra cost?

No. It’s included in every SubjectMate plan, alongside the tutor.
