Curriculum and subjects
Is SubjectMate actually aligned to the Australian curriculum?
Yes. At signup you select your child's state and year level. Every response is tailored to match that specific curriculum board: NESA for NSW, VCAA for VIC, QCAA for QLD, and so on across all eight states and territories. Every answer is matched to exactly what your child is being taught right now.
What year levels does SubjectMate cover?
SubjectMate covers Years 3 to 12, from upper primary all the way through to HSC, VCE and ATAR. See our full subjects and year levels page for details.
What subjects are available?
Maths, English, Science, History, Geography, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Economics, Legal Studies, Business Studies and PDHPE. Visit our subjects page to see full coverage by year level.
Is it suitable for primary school children?
Absolutely. SubjectMate covers Years 3 to 6 for primary school, with the tutor adjusting its language and approach to suit younger students. A Year 3 student gets a warm, encouraging experience that feels quite different to what a Year 11 student would see.
How it works
How is this different from just using a free AI chatbot?
Two big differences.

First, SubjectMate is built specifically for Australian students. A general AI chatbot has no idea what year or state your child is in. SubjectMate knows your child's year level, state curriculum and interests, and uses that in every single response.

Second, and more importantly, general AI chatbots hand over the answer. SubjectMate never does that. The tutor guides your child to discover the answer themselves, asking the right questions and breaking concepts down step by step.

A child who has worked through a problem with guidance carries that understanding into their next test. That's the difference.
Will it just do my child's homework for them?
SubjectMate guides your child to the answer rather than handing it over, and that is entirely intentional. When a student asks "what's the answer?", the tutor responds with a question that points them in the right direction.

The goal is genuine understanding. A student who uses SubjectMate properly will be able to answer the next question on their own, and the one after that in the exam.
How does SubjectMate personalise learning for my child?
At signup you tell us your child's year level, state and subject. You also share their interests: sport, music, gaming, whatever they're into. SubjectMate weaves these into every session to keep examples relevant and engaging. A child who loves cricket will have maths explained through cricket. A child who loves gaming will see science through that lens.
Can my child upload a photo of their homework?
Yes, on the Complete Support and Family Support plans. Your child can take a photo of a question from a textbook, worksheet or exam paper and the tutor will read it and guide them through it. This is one of the most used features, especially for Maths and Science. Photo uploads are available up to 10 per month on these plans.
Does the tutor remember what my child worked on before?
Yes. SubjectMate remembers your child's recent sessions, what topics they covered, where they made progress and what they found challenging. At the start of each new session the tutor opens with a warm, personalised message that references where they left off. No starting from scratch every time.
What is the maths whiteboard?
The interactive whiteboard opens alongside the chat for maths subjects. Your child can show their working in a scratchpad or draw freehand and send it directly to the tutor. The tutor responds to what they have written, so it feels like a real tutoring session where the student shows their work. Available on all plans.
What is quiz mode?
Quiz mode runs your child through 10 questions on a topic of their choice. Multiple choice for theory, short answer for calculations. The tutor marks each answer, gives brief feedback and moves to the next question. At the end your child gets a score summary with their strong areas and what is worth revisiting. Available on all plans.
What is the writing feedback panel?
For English subjects, your child can paste a piece of their writing and get structured feedback using the 3 Stars and a Wish approach. Three specific strengths, one clear thing to improve, and a short model paragraph showing what a strong version looks like. Available on Complete Support and Family Support plans.
What are badges and how does my child earn them?
Badges are milestones your child earns for effort and progress. There are badges for completing sessions, building streaks, scoring well in quizzes, studying independently without hints, and more. Badges pop up in the tutor session when earned and are displayed on your parent dashboard with the date earned and progress towards unearned ones.
How does the parent dashboard work?
Parents have a completely separate login to their child. Your dashboard has three tabs. My Child shows your child's profile and subscription. Progress shows learning insights, session history, and your child's full badge collection with progress towards unearned badges. Parent Tools lets you leave a note for the tutor before the next session and share your referral link. All updated after every session.
How does my child log in?
Each child has their own student ID (like SAM-4829) and a 4 digit PIN. They enter these on the student login screen and land straight into their session. It takes about ten seconds and there's no email or password for them to remember. You set the PIN and can update it any time from your dashboard.
Safety and privacy
Is my child's data safe?
Yes. Accounts are created and managed by parents or guardians. We never sell data to third parties, and tutoring conversation data isn't used to train AI models. Your child's data is stored securely and used only to personalise their sessions. You can read our full privacy policy at any time.
Can my child access inappropriate content?
No. SubjectMate is built specifically for Australian K-12 students. The tutor stays focused on curriculum topics and won't engage with anything outside of schoolwork. Child safety is a first principle in everything we build.
Can my child see the parent dashboard or billing details?
No. Parent and student accounts are completely separate. Your child's login takes them straight to the tutor and nothing else. Billing, progress summaries and account settings are only accessible from your parent login. Your account details stay completely private.
Billing and plans
Is there a free trial?
Yes. Every plan includes a 7 day free trial. A card is required to start but you won't be charged until the trial ends. Cancel before the 7 days is up and you pay nothing at all.
How does billing and cancellation work?
Subscriptions are billed monthly. You can cancel any time from your account dashboard with no fees and no questions asked. Cancellation takes effect at the end of your current billing period so you keep full access until then.
What is the Focused Support plan?
Focused Support gives your child unlimited tutoring in one subject at $39 per month. The subject is set at signup and stays fixed on this plan. If your child's needs change across the year, upgrading to Complete Support takes just a few seconds. All plans start with a 7 day free trial.
What is the Complete Support plan?
Complete Support covers every available subject for a single child at $59 per month. Your child can switch between subjects and year levels at any time, which makes it ideal as priorities shift across the school year. Includes a 7 day free trial.
How does the referral program work?
Every parent has a unique referral link on their dashboard under Parent Tools. Share it with another family. When they subscribe, you automatically get $10 credit applied to your next bill. The new family also gets 10 days free instead of 7 as a welcome bonus. Credits apply automatically with no codes needed.
