I have an internal assessment on differentiation next week and I keep making mistakes with the chain rule
Good that you are onto it now. Chain rule is assessed heavily in internal assessments and the external exam for Maths Methods. Before we work through it, can you tell me what the outer and inner functions are in something like f(x) = (3x² + 1) to the power of 4?
outer is something to the power 4, inner is 3x squared plus 1
Exactly right. Here is the full working laid out the way your marker expects it:
📋 Step by step working
1
Let u = inner function
u = 3x²+1
2
Differentiate u
du/dx = 6x
3
Differentiate outer
dy/du = 4u³
4
Apply chain rule
dy/dx = 4u³ × 6x
5
Substitute back
24x(3x²+1)³
Now try f(x) = sin(2x + 1) yourself. What are your outer and inner functions?

Understanding QCE assessment
Three internal assessments. One external exam. Both matter.

For General subjects, three internal assessments plus one QCAA external exam determine the final result. SubjectMate supports your child across all four.

How it works for QCE students
Built for how QCE students actually need support.

QCE students face internal assessments across three terms, then high-stakes external exams in Term 4. SubjectMate supports your child through all of it.

Internal assessment preparation the night it counts.

IAs run across three terms and the timing is always tight. SubjectMate is available every evening so your child can work through practice questions and ask anything, right up until the night before an assessment.

The tutor knows which units each IA draws on and focuses on exactly what your child needs to consolidate before tomorrow.

Internal assessment tomorrow on equilibrium and I don't understand how pressure affects the equilibrium position
Good timing to lock this in tonight. Pressure effects are a reliable IA question for Chemistry. Before I explain, can you tell me what happens to a gas reaction when we increase the pressure on the system?
it tries to reduce the pressure somehow?
Exactly right. The system shifts to oppose the change, which means it moves toward whichever side has fewer moles of gas. That is the key principle. For your IA, you need to identify the moles on each side first, then apply that logic. Want to work through a past paper example together?

External exam preparation that matches how QCAA actually marks.

The external exam is sat by every student in Queensland at the same time. For Maths and Science it carries 50% of the final result.

SubjectMate prepares your child for the external exam specifically. The working format mirrors QCAA conventions, and the tutor teaches exactly how to answer directive verbs like evaluate, calculate and justify.

The question says "evaluate the impact of increasing the mass on the gravitational potential energy of the object." How do I answer an evaluate question?
"Evaluate" in QCAA means you need to make a judgement, supported by evidence and reasoning. It is not enough to just describe what happens. A strong evaluate response has three parts: a statement of what changes and why, the evidence or formula that supports it, and a clear judgement about the significance of the change. What does the gravitational potential energy formula tell you about the relationship between mass and Ep?
Ep = mgh so if mass increases, Ep increases proportionally?
Good. That is the evidence. Now turn that into a judgement. A full QCAA response would say something like: increasing the mass has a direct proportional effect on gravitational potential energy, as shown by Ep = mgh, meaning that doubling the mass doubles the stored energy. That is the kind of response that picks up full marks. Want to try one from scratch?

Writing feedback matched to QCAA marking criteria.

Paste a practice response and get feedback structured around QCAA criteria: specific strengths, one focused improvement, and a model paragraph.

Every comment references something your child actually wrote. Immediately useful, not generic.

What is working
Argument: Your contention is clear and present throughout. Each paragraph returns to it explicitly, which shows the essay is controlled rather than drifting between ideas.
Language analysis: You identify the technique, provide the example, and explain the effect on the reader. That three-part structure is exactly what QCAA markers are looking for.
What to improve
Conclusion: Your final paragraph lists your main points rather than synthesising them. A stronger conclusion connects your analysis back to something broader about how language shapes meaning. It should open a new perspective, not close the conversation.
What a strong conclusion looks like
Ultimately, the author's deliberate choices in language and structure do more than persuade, they invite readers to examine the assumptions they bring to the text, which is perhaps the most lasting effect of any piece of writing.

Science simulations for Physics, Chemistry and Biology.

SubjectMate loads a PhET interactive simulation directly in the tutor panel. Adjust variables and observe what happens in real time.

The tutor always asks for a prediction before anything changes, building the scientific reasoning QCAA assessors reward.

What QCE families are saying.

Real results from Year 11 and 12 families who have used SubjectMate through the QCE.

★★★★★
Year 12 Maths Methods: IA results improved

"Three internal assessments across the year means there is always something coming up. Jaya used SubjectMate the night before each one and it made a real difference. She stopped panicking and started actually working through the problems. The IA2 result was the best she has had all year."

Year 11 and 12: confidence completely changed

"Mei was the kind of kid who would just stare at a problem and give up if it didn't click straight away. SubjectMate changed that. She started actually working through things because it would guide her rather than just tell her the answer. By Term 4 she was sitting down to study without being asked. That is not something I ever expected to say."

From the student

"The external exam worth 50% for Physics was what scared me most. I used SubjectMate all of Term 3 to practice the calculate and evaluate questions and by the time the exam came around I actually knew what those words meant and how to structure my answer properly."
