Question · Assess the significance of the alliance system as a cause of World War One

The alliance system was a big cause of World War One. Europe was split into the Triple Alliance and the Triple Entente. When Franz Ferdinand was assassinated in Sarajevo in 1914, Austria Hungary declared war on Serbia. Then Russia mobilised to help Serbia, so Germany declared war on Russia, and then France and Britain joined in. This shows that the alliance system dragged everyone into the war.
